It was June 9, 2007, and R.A. Dickey had hit rock bottom in every way—spiritually, relationally and vocationally. His marriage and professional baseball career were both on life support, and the emotional baggage of a traumatic childhood felt like a millstone around his neck, dragging him into a spiritual abyss. Dickey, a 32-year-old career minor leaguer at the time, had jumped into the Missouri River in a moment of impulsive, ill-fated hubris to prove a silly point to himself and some teammates, believing he could cross the great divide. But the river’s strong currents shows no respect for persons or situations, and soon Dickey was sinking. Then his feet hit bottom.

HARDIN COUNTY, TN. — Former Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer has been named the keynote speaker at this year’s Hardin County Hall of Fame Sports banquet. The event takes place on July 27 at the Pickwick Landing State Park Inn. MENOMONIE, WI — Former Minnesota Viking and current Director of Football Development for the NFL, Matt Birk, will attend the 24th annual Western WI Youth Football Camp from July 26 until July 28 to be held at Menomonie Middle School. The camp, run by over 25 coaches from across Western, Wis., will be featured as a model camp by the NFL and will run from 6 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. each night. BEREA, OH. — Former Ohio State head football coach and current Youngstown State University President, Jim Tressel, will host a meet and greet with golfers during the Berea High School Alumni Association’s annual golf benefit on July 10 at Coppertop at Cherokee Hills in Valley City. PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. — Yankees legend, Bobby Richardson, will be the guest speaker at Pittsylvania County Sports Hall of Fame’s second induction ceremony to be held on Aug. 7, 2015. The Sports Hall of Fame ceremony will include 14 inductees, four of whom are posthumous. The event, which is open to the public, takes place at 7 p.m. at White Oak Grove Outreach Ministries on Dry Fork Road in Dry Fork, Va. ST. LOUIS, MO. — Former St. Louis Rams quarterback, Kurt Warner, has been named the keynote speaker at the 25th Annual Christian Day at the Ballpark. The event will be after the Cardinal-Mets game at 1:15 p.m. Sunday, July 19 at Busch Stadium. The first 25,000 fans 16 & up will receive a Throwback Warner STL v-neck T-Shirt. Former Cardinal and now broadcaster Rick Horton will emcee the event. Current Cardinals players and manager Mike Matheny will also participate in the post-game outreach event.
