DAYTONA BEACH, FL. — Former Florida State University coach Bobby Bowden has been named the keynote speaker for the “Gala 4 Kids” fundraiser to be held on Feb. 6 at the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort. The event begins with a mix and mingle at 6 p.m. followed by a 7 p.m. dinner at the Hilton’s Coquina Ballroom, located at 100 N. Atlantic Ave.in Daytona Beach. Tickets are $150 per person. Funds raised from the event will benefit Excellerate, an Ormond Beach-based nonprofit that provides life-skills training and vehicles to teenagers aging out of the foster care system. According to the nonprofit’s National Director, J. Toro, Bowden’s relationship with former FSU football players who are connected to Excellerate helped secure him as keynote speaker. The retired FSU coach with the NCAA record for the most career and bowl wins in Division I is a big boost for the fundraiser, Toro said.
“After a lifetime of mentoring football players at the collegiate level he has a heart to help the current generation of youths,” Toro said. “We are encouraging the community to join him in helping the modern orphan.”

Excellerate, housed at the Calvary Christian Center campus in Ormond Beach, provides a four-month life skills class to area teenagers who are living in foster care or in group homes. After completing the course, which meets twice a week, teenagers are eligible to receive a donated car. Since 2012 the organization has provided 38 cars to foster youths. It costs the nonprofit about $7,500 to conduct the program per teenager.
Bobby Bowden is the former head college football coach of the Florida State University Seminoles. His personality and charm are bigger than life and he has become somewhat of a folk hero. An engaging motivational speaker, Bowden is constantly in demand and most of his free evenings will find him on the speaking circuit. His off-season travel schedule would exhaust anyone.
