Strawberry, who has has battled substance abuse, run-ins with the law and has had to overcome multiple bouts with cancer, spoke openly at the breakfast about his personal issues, but at the heart of his message was no matter how bad it seems, one should never give up no matter how difficult life’s circumstances become.
“I had the world, all the worldly possessions, but I lost my soul and was on my way to Hell,” said Strawberry, who was the guest speaker at the Pine Belt chapter’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes annual Breakfast of Champions on Friday. “I was a heathen. I was a sinner. I was lost in sin and could be that way because I was a great baseball player… but what good does it do for a man to gain the whole world but lose his soul?”
Strawberry, who is now an ordained minister and runs Strawberry Ministries, spoke for more than 30 minutes to hundreds of local high school and junior high athletes, coaches and parents at the Thad Cochran Center on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg.
“I think we need to help young people understand quitting is not an option,” he said. “I think so many of us give up on life and throw in the towel. I quit in high school and came close to quitting in pro ball. But sometimes we don’t realize that God has a plan for our lives.”
