MARSHALL, TX — Former NFL player and Super Bowl Champion, Matt Stover, was the inaugural presenter for the recently established Meyer Lecture Series. Stover, a devout Christian who speaks openly about his faith in Christ, spoke on Monday, Feb. 10 during Chapel held in Baker Auditorium of the Ornelas Spiritual Life Center.

Phillip Meyer, a Houston businessman, has provided the financing to bring guest speakers to campus in order to encourage students to see themselves as kingdom citizens whose calling is to serve Christ through their respective vocations. Following Chapel, Stover, along with Meyer, interacted with ETBU students. Stover spoke earlier that morning at a breakfast attended by members of the ETBU Tiger football team.
“Generous men and women of vision make a tremendous difference for East Texas Baptist University,” said Dr. Dane Fowlkes, ETBU Director of Major Gifts. “The Meyer Lectures, funded through the vision and generosity of Phillip Meyer is a wonderful example. This annual event will encourage every student to see the possibilities for integrating their deep faith with their chosen vocation. Matt Stover, embodies this integration from his exceptional athletic career and exemplary faith.”
During the Ravens’ run to the 2000 Super Bowl, Stover had to carry the load scoring-wise during the season. Watch the video where Ufford and Stover banter about that in this June 2013 SB Nation episode of Uffsides.
Stover, who played 19 years in the NFL, spent 12 years kicking for the Ravens before ending his career in 2009 with the Indianapolis Colts. Stover, also a devout Christian, formed the Matt Stover Foundation with his wife in 2002. The Matt Stover Foundation is dedicated to improving the Baltimore community and helping those in need through a variety of programs, outreach, and support.
